These days, all our thoughts, images and even our current location seem to be out in the open online for all to see nearly every day. And whether you are a candidate looking for work, a business person running your own small business or an executive within a large company, what you post and HOW you post MATTERS to how the people in your life will perceive you and your personal BRAND, both personally and professionally. Let’s start with the basics – TYPOS! There is just no excuse for not reviewing your short online post. Check your spelling before posting! Posting with extensive typos doesn’t make anyone look smart. In fact, it sends the message that you don’t care, that perhaps you are not very smart, or that you are sloppy, and can’t be bothered. Not the impression you want to make to colleagues, clients or even to friends! TAKE THE TIME! Read and check before rushing to hit “publish”, every single time! Photos – also important! Before posting your own image in the overtly sexy dress, or you out getting drunk with friends, again – think about the message your images convey. Whether you are a student coming out of college in search of your first serious job, or just a fun loving middle aged individual who likes to indulge occasionally, your images will be out there for quite some time. If your photos are mostly pouty selfies, that may not bode well for your next job interview. Be interesting and show your interests, not just your party capabilities or the results of your last workout. Each image doesn’t need to be a portrait, but make sure it’s the image that represents you well. Finally, the dreaded POLITICAL posts! If you are in business, which most of us are, do try to keep the inflammatory politics to a minimum! Our current political scene has taken over the social media landscape! I have witnessed marketing executives who work for public companies (who of all people should know better) trashing one party or another online in a very public manner, and using language they would never use in person. Did they stop to think that each “side” most includes some of their own co-workers and friends? Before you alienate half of your contacts (and negatively impact your career) consider first if the post you are about to publish worth it? Or should it be reserved for lunch with a like-minded friend? THINK before you post. Be mindful of the information you share and try to be thoughtful. Don’t misunderstand, while it is important to have an opinion it’s also about considering where and how these discussions take place. Our culture encourages strong opinions, but as you represent your “brand” also consider implementing civility, encouraging constructive discourse, and implementing manners as you share your opinions. Again, nearly 50% of people have a different opinion than yours. HR professionals, hiring managers, potential clients and close contacts and friends are ALL reading and reviewing your information online. Be mindful of your own PERSONAL brand, and what it says about you professionally! Need help with your corporate brand? Email us at Hello@WestBayMarketingCompany.com
