3 Simple Tips for Getting Published in Your Industry

Picture
Getting articles published within your own industry can seem challenging. But with a little research, understanding of the types of valuable content you can offer, plus someone who can create great content, you can get your company greater visibility that can potentially lead to additional leads and increased business!

1. First, take time to find the RIGHT publications to target.  Check out your current industry publications and journals, particularly those who publish articles authored by other companies or experts in your field or those writers who cover products, services or topics similar to what you provide. Look online for their submission guidelines.  And do your research!  You don’t want to waste time contacting a magazine or annoying editors that are not going to entertain your offer.

2.
Track down the right contacts. For the magazines you are interested in, reach out to get the contact information for the people you want to target. Look for editors, journalists or writers who cover topics like yours, and provide them with an interesting pitch to see if they will do a story or are interested in an article you can provide. Email your pitch, or even some sample titles to test the waters and see if they are open and/or interested in your content and topics. Create a clever title and then a few lines that explain the piece. Many “industry specific” publications are open to quality content, particularly if it provides value to their readers.

3.
Create quality content!  Identify topics that are of real value to potential readers, that provide timely advice, useful viewpoints or projections or even guidance on solving a problem. Be mindful of the overall “tone” of the piece, especially make sure it’s not too self-promoting. You want you or your company to come across as knowledgeable, helpful and someone with real perspective on a problem or solution. If the piece is too “sales focused”, chances are slim that it will be considered.

With a little research, effort and solid writing, your content can be included in pertinent industry and business publications, opening the door for additional content down the road. And you can use your published materials across your own promotional channels lending further credibility to you and your product or service.

Managing Your Personal Brand  - Your Social Media Posts Matter!

Picture

These days, all our thoughts, images and even our current location seem to be out in the open online for all to see nearly every day. And whether you are a candidate looking for work, a business person running your own small business or an executive within a large company, what you post and HOW you post MATTERS to how the people in your life will perceive you and your personal BRAND, both personally and professionally.

Let’s start with the basics – TYPOS!  There is just no excuse for not reviewing your short online post. Check your spelling before posting! Posting with extensive typos doesn’t make anyone look smart.  In fact, it sends the message that you don’t care, that perhaps you are not very smart, or that you are sloppy, and can’t be bothered.  Not the impression you want to make to colleagues, clients or even to friends!  TAKE THE TIME!  Read and check before rushing to hit “publish”, every single time!

Photos – also important!  Before posting your own image in the overtly sexy dress, or you out getting drunk with friends, again – think about the message your images convey. Whether you are a student coming out of college in search of your first serious job, or just a fun loving middle aged individual who likes to indulge occasionally, your images will be out there for quite some time. If your photos are mostly pouty selfies, that may not bode well for your next job interview. Be interesting and show your interests, not just your party capabilities or the results of your last workout.  Each image doesn’t need to be a portrait, but make sure it’s the image that represents you well.

Finally, the dreaded POLITICAL posts!  If you are in business, which most of us are, do try to keep the inflammatory politics to a minimum!  Our current political scene has taken over the social media landscape! I have witnessed marketing executives who work for public companies (who of all people should know better) trashing one party or another online in a very public manner, and using language they would never use in person.  Did they stop to think that each “side” most includes some of their own co-workers and friends?  Before you alienate half of your contacts (and negatively impact your career) consider first if the post you are about to publish worth it? Or should it be reserved for lunch with a like-minded friend?  THINK before you post.  Be mindful of the information you share and try to be thoughtful.  Don’t misunderstand, while it is important to have an opinion it’s also about considering where and how these discussions take place. Our culture encourages strong opinions, but as you represent your “brand” also consider implementing civility, encouraging constructive discourse, and implementing manners as you share your opinions. Again, nearly 50% of people have a different opinion than yours.

HR professionals, hiring managers, potential clients and close contacts and friends are ALL reading and reviewing your information online.  Be mindful of your own PERSONAL brand, and what it says about you professionally!
